When severe storms move through our area, the damage they leave behind can be overwhelming. At The Agent Insurance Services, we’re already helping many of our clients navigate the claims process, and one question we’ve been hearing is:
“Can FEMA help me?”
The answer is: possibly—but it depends on whether the storm receives a federal disaster declaration and whether you qualify. Here’s what you need to know.

First Things First: File Your Insurance Claim
If your home or property was damaged, your homeowners insurance is your first line of protection.
Before considering FEMA assistance, you should:
- Contact your insurance company (or call The Agent and we’ll help you get the process started)
- Document all damage with photos and videos
- Make temporary repairs to prevent additional damage
- Save receipts for emergency repairs and temporary living expenses if your policy provides coverage
In most cases, FEMA assistance is designed to help with losses that are not covered by insurance – not replace your insurance coverage.
When Can You Apply for FEMA Assistance?
FEMA assistance is only available after the President issues a federal disaster declaration for your area.
Not every storm receives this designation. State and local officials must first assess the damage before requesting federal assistance.
If a disaster declaration is approved, affected residents can apply through several methods:
- Online at DisasterAssistance.gov
- Through the FEMA mobile app
- By calling 1-800-621-3362
- In person at a local Disaster Recovery Center if one is established
What Information Will You Need?
Having the following information ready can help speed up the application process:
- Social Security number
- Current contact information
- Address of the damaged property
- Insurance policy information
- A description of the damage
- Household income information
- Bank account information if you want direct deposit
What Does FEMA Help Cover?
Every situation is different, and assistance depends on your eligibility. FEMA may provide help for expenses such as:
- Temporary housing if your home is uninhabitable
- Certain home repairs
- Essential personal property that was damaged
- Disaster-related medical or dental expenses
- Transportation needs
- Crisis counseling services
- Disaster unemployment assistance through partner agencies
- Referrals to additional state, local, and nonprofit resources
It’s important to understand that FEMA assistance is not intended to make you “whole” after a disaster. Instead, it helps meet basic needs and assists with essential recovery costs that insurance doesn’t cover.
What Happens After You Apply?
After submitting your application, FEMA will review your information.
Depending on your situation, FEMA may:
- Verify your identity and residency
- Review your insurance settlement
- Schedule a home inspection
- Request additional documentation
Once your application has been reviewed, you’ll receive a determination letter explaining what assistance has been approved—or what additional information is needed.
If you disagree with FEMA’s decision, you have the right to appeal.

Insurance Comes First
One of the biggest misconceptions after a disaster is that FEMA replaces insurance.
It doesn’t.
If you have homeowners insurance, you’re expected to file your insurance claim first. FEMA may be able to help with eligible expenses that your insurance doesn’t cover, but it generally cannot duplicate insurance benefits.
That’s why having the right insurance coverage before a storm strikes is so important.
