“The Ten Worst insurance Companies in America” was published by the American Association for Justice a few years back. That organization did an exhaustive study and published their findings in a 28 page report that shocked many consumers.

They listed the Ten Worst Insurance Companies in America in this order,

  1. Allstate
  2. Unum
  3. AIG
  4. State Farm
  5. Conseco
  6. WellPoint
  7. Farmers
  8. UnitedHealth
  9. Torchmark
  10. Liberty Mutual

Companies reduce coverage in the fine print making it hard for consumers to compare policies. I often have clients tell me they found another company that will give them the same coverage for less money. What they mean is the dollar amount coverage on their home and the deductible is the same as they currently have. You would actually have to read the entire policy to see if you really have the same coverage. As an example, some companies do not cover any detached structures (sheds, pools, fences, garages) unless you specifically add this coverage.

Unfortunately, you don’t find this out until you have a claim. And it’s not just fly by night companies that are doing offering less coverage without telling you. Look at the list above. There are some pretty big companies listed there.

Talk to your agent, and I mean really talk to him or her. Can we write you a policy over the phone? Sure we can. But we prefer to have you come in so we can have a good discussion about what’s important to you. We pride ourselves on taking care of our clients, but you have to do your part, too. So when we ask you to come in to review your coverages, take advantage of the opportunity.
