People can be injured or even killed if their body, hair, jewelry or clothes get caught up in the drain.

Here are a few simple tips to help prevent drain injury:

  • Buy a good drain cover. Laws mandate that public pools have them. They are not required in a private pool but it is still a good idea to have them. They newer models have more vents than previous versions and they are raised up from the floor of the pool.
  • Install a Safety Vacuum Release System. This will shut off the pump if something blocks the drain.
  • Keep loose items out of the pool. Don’t wear baggy clothing, remove jewelry and tie up long hair before getting in the pool.
  • Clearly mark the shut off switch. Make sure everyone who uses the pool knows where it is and how to shut it off.
  • The buddy system. No one should swim alone.
  • Teach children about the dangers of the drain and to stay away from it.
  • Safety equipment. Have life rings and reaching poles nearby.
  • Fence off the pool. Use a self-closing and self-latching gate to keep children from swimming unsupervised.

If someone does get caught in the drain, turn off the pump. Insert your fingers or some other small object between the drain and the person’s body to break the seal and then roll them off.
