Drone Insurance?

Piloting a drone might sound like child’s play, but before you take flight, there are some things you should know.

Are you aware that your drone may need to be registered? The FAA has mandated registration for most drones and has issued guidelines on their use.

Why am I writing about drones on an insurance blog? What if equipment failure or pilot error leads to property damage or injury? Let’s face it, most drone operators start out with little or no experience. Drones weigh up to 55 pounds. Something that size could cause some serious damage and that’s where your insurance comes in.

All claims are handled on a case by case basis, but below are some instances where your insurance might be called into play because you own a drone. Just so you know, your insurance probably won’t help you out if you are using your drone for something illegal.

Homeowners and renters insurance

Since your drone is your property, it is covered for theft or damage just like any of your other possessions are.

Your liability coverage will likely protect you if you are sued for causing property damage or injury. It may even cover you against privacy issues if you accidentally videotape a neighbor and they aren’t happy about it. It will not defend you if your purposely invade someone’s privacy.

If you have medical coverage on your policy, this endorsement will pay out if a friend or stranger is accidentally injured. This coverage is only for people who do not live in your household.

Auto insurance

If you crash the drone into your car, the damage will be covered under your auto insurance if you have comprehensive coverage.

Commercial insurance

If you are using the drone for commercial reasons, check with your agent to make sure you have the coverage you need.

Have fun with that new drone, but be careful and make sure you are protected in the event of an accident.
