How are American flags properly retired?
Each year, we host our annual Flag Day Flag Exchange, where the public can bring in their old, tattered American flags and exchange them for brand new ones. But what happens to the exchanged flags? How are they properly retired?

We asked Steve Toohey of the wonderful organization Operation Flags of Freedom to explain:
That is a great question from folks! Most people know very little to nothing about the American flag etiquette at all. There are many specifics that show that we care for our flag and treat it with the utmost dignity. Flag retirement is done by burning the flags. It is not performed in the disrespectful way that we find during protests. That is horrible and makes my blood boil!I will have the Boy Scouts and VFW members have a very proper ceremony to dispose of them, (although anyone may do it). The initial flag to be burned is cut apart. The white and red stripes are seperated, along with the Jack with stars. Then the Pledge of Allegiance is said aloud, followed by each member laying their piece of the flag on the fire with respect. The rest of the flags may be placed into the fire for disposal.
Here’s a typical process for retiring an American flag:
American flags are properly retired with respect and dignity, following guidelines set by the U.S. Flag Code.
- Preparation: Choose a suitable location and time for the ceremony. It often involves a solemn and respectful setting. At The Agent Insurance Services, the flags that are exchanged are properly retired by Operation Flags of Freedom.
- Cutting: Begin by cutting the flag into pieces, typically along the stripes, separating the blue field of stars from the rest of the flag.
- Burning: The separated pieces are then placed into a fire, with proper precautions taken to ensure safety and to prevent any disrespect to the flag. As the flag burns, it should be accompanied by a respectful ceremony, which may include reciting the Pledge of Allegiance or singing the national anthem.
- Disposition of Ashes: Once the flag is completely burned, the ashes are collected and buried in a dignified manner.
- Ceremony: Throughout the process, it’s essential to maintain a respectful and solemn atmosphere, recognizing the flag’s significance and the values it represents.

We must all remember that we honor our flag as we honor those who have protected it throughout our country’s history. Red is for Valor and Bravery.White is for Purity and Innocence. Blue is for Vigilance, Perseverance, and Justice.
